Avon: Beloved wife, mother, daughter, and sister passed away on March 30, 2014. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle (Willis) Cordell; son, David Nelson; grandchildren Stephanie (Tom) Burdick, Shaun Nelson; great-grandchildren, Payne and Milo Burdick; sisters, Loraine Medley, Ann (Robert) Croston; several nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter Nelson. Ruby was born in Avon, NY, the first of three daughters of the late William and Ruth Pollard. Ruby attended Fisk University in Nashville, TN and graduated from Buffalo State. She also attended SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Brockport, and the University of Rochester. Ruby’s teaching career began in Buffalo and continued in Rochester. She retired in 1993 as Principal of #19 School. Ruby was a member of the American Assoc. of University Women, School Administrators Assoc. of NYS, International Reading Assoc., Rochester Chapter of the Links, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and creator of the Illumination of Lights Program for The Clayton A. Coles Scholarship Commision of The Second Baptist Church, Mumford, NY. Ruby had a way with words; generating quiet attention, serious thought, and often laughter, and to her family Ruby said “All I ask of you is forever to remember me as loving you”.
Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday, 10-Noon at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 350 Genesee St., Avon where her Funeral Service will be held following calling hours at Noon. Private interment, Avon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Clayton A. Coles Scholarship Fund, c/o Second Baptist Church, 957 George St., Mumford, NY 14511.
